California Mayor’s Property Site of Possible Super Meth Lab?

The Mayor of Bell, Oscar Hernandez is in disbelief that his tenants would actually have the goods to start a super lab beneath his nose and on his property. That, however, is exactly what the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is claiming.

Two men were arrested at the home that Mayor Hernandez originally rented to a small family. The arrestees included the father in the family as well as a house guest who had been staying with them from out of the country.

The Mayor states that both men were released from Sherriff’s Department custody later that same morning, but the Department would not confirm this. The Department did say that materials were found within the unit that would be capable of producing 20 pounds of methamphetamines in a single batch, making it what authorities refer to as a “super lab”.

Mayor Hernandez expressed some pity for the family as they still have not been able to reenter their home since it was sealed. He states, according to this LA Times report, that the tenants state the materials were not meth lab related at all and instead served as “glue for tile adhesives.”

Meth labs are extremely dangerous scenes that require hazardous material handling and serious caution when dismantling. If what was found was not actually meth ingredients it is likely that the city spent a lot of man hours and money removing evidence that isn’t toxic at all under the circumstances. I’m sure we haven’t seen the last of this case considering the property owner and I am interested to see how it pans out.

Drug offenses can carry very serious prison sentences, particularly for people charged with manufacturing or distributing a substance as dangerous as methamphetamines. Serious felony charges can be a real headache when you don’t necessarily understand how the system works.
